2. Go over to RW's place. He's holding a contest to name an old time railroad town that HE'S BUILDING. The attention to detail...the meticulousness (word? word!) that he's put into it just astounds me. Truly amazing.

K & I took the kids to Pottery to Paint one day (if you haven't tried it, you should - FUN!) and this was my very first attempt at anything like this... I'm taking my nephews to do something for their mom for Mother's Day.

January 19, 1980. A little after 9:47 a.m.(2 1/2 weeks before my due date.)

Me, on phone: "Happy Birthday Dad!"

Dad: "Thanks hon"

Me: "I don't have a card for you"

D: "I don't need a card, all I need is this, to hear from you"

Me: "Oh, but I got you a gift"

D: "I don't need anything -don't waste your money - take it back"

Me: "I'm not taking it back. It's the most expensive thing I've ever bought anyone"

D: "If it's that damn expensive, take it back - I told you I don't need anything"

Me: "I really don't think they'll let me take it back Dad, and I don't want to"

D: "Then bring it to me, and I'll take it back dammit. They'll take it back from me."

Me: "Dad, why don't you come on down to the hospital and see your new granddaughter"

Silence. Dead silence. But I swear I could hear the smile reaching from one ear to the other on his face. He didn't make me take her back...and he didn't try to take her back, either. He walked into my room, she was in the nursery. He asked which one she was, I said "The one that looks just.like.you." And she did. From that very first moment on, she was, as I am, Tug's girl.

My dad is my hero...my daughter is one of my best friends. I'm so proud of the man my dad is, and the way he lives his life and treats people; I hope I can eventually be 1/2 the person he is.

I'm also so proud of the woman my daughter has become - she is strong, beautiful (see pic above), loving, and a truly amazing woman I am lucky to have as my 'baby'.

Happy Birthday to them both, with much love!

Thumbing through a junk mail catalog after my brother was killed, this jumped out at me. When reading about it, I found it was a cross of St. Kevin (my brother's name, without the saint duh). I'd never heard of St. Kevin, so I did some research, and found that they were very similar. I bought one of these for my other 2 brothers and my parents for Christmas that year, and attached the history of St. Kevin along with my memories of my brother. I also bought one for myself, and everywhere I've lived since then it has a place by the doors; he's my protector now, as he always was.

Finn had mentioned yesterday how she'd love to see the picture in black & white, and while I truly LOVE black & white pictures...I never think to do them. huh. SO. For photo editing, I just have a downloaded free version of GIMP - I don't have photoshop & all of it's goodness. I've read that doing a sepia, then black & white works well, but didn't have/can't find that option of sepia with GIMP. So the first picture is just desaturating...the second, I played with brightness & contrast - what do you think?
